Why do Dips form under turf after it rains
When it rains, the soil beneath artificial grass can become prone to settling. This is because rainwater weighs down the soil and causes it to compact. As the soil compacts, it begins to settle, resulting in dips or depressions in the area where the artificial grass has been installed. This settling of the soil can have several adverse effects on the look of an artificial grass installation. Firstly, it can create an uneven surface, with some areas of the grass appearing higher than others. This can make the area look untidy and unattractive. It can also cause the artificial grass to become worn in certain areas due to uneven weight distribution. Soil settling from rain can also cause the artificial grass to become loose and come away from the ground. This can result in a wavy or uneven appearance and cause the grass to become damaged or easily torn.
Whose responsible?
I’m sure, like many, your initial instinct is to blame the installer or the turf company. However, they shouldn’t be held responsible for soil settling since it is an act of nature outside their control. When it rains, the water weighs down the soil and causes it to compact, resulting in dips or depressions in the area where the artificial grass has been installed. This is something that a contractor cannot predict or prevent, mainly because the settling can happen a couple of feet below. This is far below the industry standard of 3-4 inch removal during the installation process. We recommend contacting your installation company and working out a deal to resolve the issue.
How to re-level a Lawn caused by ground settling
To resolve this issue, you would have to peel back the turf where the dip is, compact the soil, add base or Dg to level it off, and compact it again. Once the area is compacted and the turf is stretched and resecured, make sure to reapply the infill evenly. The great news is that once a dip occurs and is fixed, it rarely happens again.
